“Respite and Work”

Con’t from Kim’s <GATEWAY> “What’s a Mani-Pedi?”

=======

Location: GS-2

Stardate: 2424 [2.8] 0122.1241

Scene: Sickbay

The sharp and loud sound of a piece of metal being kicked down the corridor
drew Jeff’s attention, causing him to put down his PADD and look up through
the glass partition that separated the sickbay duty office from the main
area of the large infirmary. Not immediately seeing anyone, he got up and
walked out of his office, finally spotting someone bending down to pick up a
tricorder.

“Can I help you sir?” Jeff asked, not immediately recognizing the
individual.

“Are you Dr. Jeffrey Gorman?” the man asked, walking up to him.

“Yes sir,” Jeff answered.

“Captain Ben Kenta,” was the reply, as Kenta stuck out his hand for Gorman
to shake.

“Nice to meet you sir,” Jeff said, returning the handshake before taking the
tricorder from the other man. “Sorry, I guess someone was a bit careless.”
He put the tricorder on a nearby tray before turning and heading back to his
office, sitting down and gesturing for the Captain to take the seat
opposite.

“How can I help you sir?” Jeff asked.

“I’m the Commanding Officer of the USS PATRIOT,” Ben answered. “We were
heading up the initial fleet that responded to the Dominion attack.”

“Right,” Jeff said, with a nod of his head. He didn’t venture anything
else, figuring that Kenta wasn’t finished.

“It looks like we’re going to be involved in the war effort for awhile,”
Kenta said. “And our ship is in need of an Executive Officer. The main
problem however, is that with Starfleet scrambling to find forces to commit
to this sector, there appears to be a shortage of senior officers to fill
the roll.”

“I can imagine,” Gorman answered, not sure if he was fond of the direction
the conversation was going.

“Well, I was given permission to recruit one of the GATEWAY senior officers
for the task,” Kenta said, looking down at the PADD. “And I’ve decided that
you would be the best person for the job.”

Jeff blinked, having seen it coming. “How long would this be for?” he
asked.

“Initially it would be a temporary assignment,” Kenta explained. “For the
duration of the PATRIOT’s service in the war. If your performance is
satisfactory and you’d like to keep the position, then I would have to
contact Starfleet Command and arrange it.”

“I see,” Jeff said, thinking it over. “Are we going to be on the front
lines until the end of the war?”

“Probably not,” Kenta said. “The PATRIOT has some other fish to fry, but
I’d guess we’ll be in and out of the front lines quite a few times.”

Jeff nodded his understanding. “Do I have a choice in accepting?” he asked.

Kenta smiled faintly. “Not really,” he answered. “You might be able to
come back here once we get someone else, but at the moment the PATRIOT’s in
need of an ExO and you’re one of the few with enough experience to fill that
role.”

Jeff nodded again. “Okay,” he said. “When do I report in?”

“Tomorrow morning,” Kenta said, struggling somewhat to his feet with a look
of strain on his face.

“Are you okay sir?” Jeff asked with concern, coming around his desk to
assist the PATRIOT’s CO.

“I’m fine Commander,” Kenta said, waving him off. “Just a little tired. In
any case, don’t forget to report to the PATRIOT tomorrow morning as we’re
due to shove off for our next assignment very soon.”

“Aye sir,” Jeff said, waiting and watching as Kenta slowly made his way out
of the office. A few moments later, a loud beeping from his terminal drew
the doctor’s attention and resumed sitting down at his desk, entering his
access code in order to get the message.

He listened to the complete message from Kat twice (NRPG: reference “A
letter”, written by Joy January 9th) before leaning back in his chair and
wondering how he was going to explain the most recent turn of events.

“Computer,” he said finally. “Record message”

“Heya Kitten,” he said, putting on a smile as the message started to record.
“First thing’s first, I’m fine and sickbay actually survived the battle
pretty well. Apparently, Jem’Hadar soldiers are easier to deal with than
giant turkeys.”

He then frowned slightly, still having no clue how to phrase the next part.
Finally, he shrugged and decided to just plough through.

“It looks like I’ve been given a non-negotiable transfer,” he said. “I’m to
assume temporary duties as Executive Officer of the PATRIOT from tomorrow
morning until the end of the PATRIOT’s presence in the theatre of war.
Depending on how things shake out, they might even extend my duty for a
longer time than that.”

He sighed. “It looks like we’re both going to be apart for the duration of
this war at least, although hopefully we’ll get a few chances to meet when
our ships are both docked at GATEWAY. I hope you being on the MCINNIS will
give Xana some of the support she needs and I hope I get a chance to see you
and the children very soon.”

A noise from the corridor temporarily drew his attention. Anticipating that
his services were about to be needed, Jeff turned back to the screen with an
apologetic look. “I have to go now, but I’ll try to contact you again
before the PATRIOT starts her mission. I love you and the children very
much.”

“Computer, end message and send to the desk of Commander Katlina Gorman,
Executive Officer, USS MCINNIS.”

As the computer issued its beep of acknowledgement, Jeff got up and walked
out into his sickbay, a look of surprise crossing his face when he saw who
it was.

“What happened to you?” he asked, walking up to where Daniel was seated on
the biobed and looking at him with a look somewhere between surprise and
amusement on his face.

“It’s a long story,” Daniel replied with a sigh, his voice distorted because
of the injury to his nasal passage.

“I see,” Jeff said. “Well, it looks like nothing we can’t handle, but I’ll
run a scan just to be sure.” He grabbed a tricorder from a nearby tray and
started scanning.

“So,” Jeff said, directing his voice at the woman that was with Daniel. “I
don’t believe we’ve met.”

“Jeff, this is Catherine, my wife,” Daniel made the introductions.
“Catherine, this is Jeff, my former roommate when I was at the academy.”

“Pleased to finally meet you,” Jeff said with a smile, putting down the
tricorder and holding out his hand.

“Likewise,” Catherine replied, shyly taking his hand and shaking it.

“Well,” Jeff said, putting the tricorder down and picking up another
instrument. “I actually have news that is pertinent to you both.”

“Oh?” Catherine asked. “And what might that be?”

“It looks like I’ve just been assigned to the XO slot on your ship for the
duration of the war,” Jeff said, putting down the instrument and motioning
to Daniel that he could get off the biobed. “And that’s not all – it looks
like we’re leaving tomorrow morning.”

NRPG: Well, that one was interesting! I just kept on collecting different
things I had to reply to and that eventually resolved itself into this post.

In any case, I think I got everything that I needed to touch on; if I missed
something, feel free to drop me a line and I’ll get to it in my next post.

Erik -> Hope the additions I made to the post put it in line with your
comments from the NRPG.

Joy -> How was that? Hopefully I did some justice to your initial post, and
we need to chat about the future at some point on MSN.

PATRIOT crew -> We actually are shoving off, though probably not tomorrow
morning! I’ll be putting a post together in the next 2-3 days or so and
that post will be the opener for our new mission. We’ll be on the mission
for about a month’s time and it will relate in some fashion to the war we’ve
got going on right now. So, if you’ve got something pressing to get to in
R&R, now would be the time.
