"Ice-Skating Bajorans and Sadistic Officers"

Scene: Holodeck

"Get yours on. Yours too, Counselor," he ordered as Tam looked hesitantly at the frozen surface.

"My what, Doctor?" she asked, watching him slide almost effortlessly over the ice.

"Your skates." Sure enough, there were a few pairs of ice skates sitting on the bank of the frozen lake. Lieutenant Corwin had already beaten her to it, crouching next to the pile and sorting through it, presumably for her size. Shaking her head, Tam went over and bent over next to her.

The lieutenant looked up. "So what's your boot size?" When Tam told her, she tossed one of the rejected pairs over to her. "You know how to lace these?"

"No. Do you?"

"Yes. Here, let me get mine on and then I'll give you a hand." Tam opened her mouth to protest, but she had a feeling that Corwin wouldn't listen to her. Besides, she really didn't have any idea how to fasten the skates: she'd never been skating before, although she'd heard it referenced before.

Tam swapped her boots for her skates and waited, watching Gorman and Clarkson chasing each other around the ice. Every so often Maverick would swoop past them, not as technically correct (she assumed) but still skating very well. They were yelling back and forth and appeared to be having a good time. **Not my choice of entertainment, but at least they're having fun.** Clarkson also seemed to not notice his back injury, either, which was good, although she would ensure that the sickbay had muscle relaxants available afterward.

So far, only the remaining senior staff were in the holodeck. The message that had been sent shipwide had actually contained a slightly later time for the rest of the crew to join them, as she and Gorman had agreed that the senior staff would probably want some time to unwind with those not under their command. **Now if only the rest of the senior staff were here.** The crewmembers that were functioning as de facto senior staff were either planetside or coming later with the rest of the crew. She frowned when she realized that the Captain wasn't present, either. Of all the crew, he probably needed the relaxation the most, especially since he kept evading her when she contacted him regarding a counseling appointment. She was loathe to call for a medical leave as long as he seemed to be mostly coping.

"Okay, give me your foot." Corwin's voice pulled her out of her reverie, and she explained the process as she whipped through the motions. "Here, you do your other skate, I'm going to take a practice lap." And like that, she pushed up from the ground, wobbled slightly, and pushed off onto the ice. She was, on skill level, somewhere beneath Maverick, but still capable of moving somewhat smoothly.

It took a minute for Tam to get it right, but she got the skates laced, then stood and ran into a problem. She couldn't figure out how to move. She wobbled uncertainly for a second, then steadied herself, but still couldn't figure out how to get anywhere. Watching Gorman and Clarkson got her nowhere, except confused over the teams that they were insulting back and forth. Human sports tended to escape her.

"Just move your feet, Counselor!" Maverick shouted as he glided past her. She jumped, slipped, and was about to fall when he came back around and grabbed her arm. "Careful!"

"Thank you. And care is more effective if you know what you're doing."

He grinned. "You don't know how to skate?" She probably should have taken warning from that, but Corwin skated up beside her on the other side. "Do you know she doesn't know how to skate?"

"Yes." Corwin grinned exactly the same way. "You take that side?"

"Sure. Just move your feet!" And they shot off. Or, more accurately, Corwin and Maverick shot off, dragging a protesting Tam between them.

NRPG: I have never heard of a Bajoran skating. Then again, they can play baseball, so why not?
Just a filler, really.
