“Attrition”

Continued from Naomi’s “Second Time”

Location: USS PATRIOT

Stardate: 2424 [2.8] 0623.2307

Scene: Bridge

Time Index: Marathon +3.00

The PATRIOT rocked as a burst of energy hit the ship, sending the Captain to
the ground from where he’d been standing behind Tanith at the helm.

“That last hit brought our shields down to 65%!” came the report from
tactical as the Ensign frantically scrambled to give it. “We can’t take
much more of this type of punishment if we want to be in any kind of
position to mount an offensive against the other arrays.”

“Can you get transport the marines down to the surface yet?” Jeff asked,
helping the Captain back to his feet.

“The shield grid is weak enough in a few spots,” Sanba said, tapping a few
buttons on her console and nodding. “I should be able to create enough
destructive interference with a weak wave signal to facilitate transporting
the three teams into the array, but I can’t guarantee where they’ll end up.”

“As long as it’s inside the array, I won’t be too picky,” Ben replied.
“Initiate the transport Lieutenant.”

“Aye sir,” Sanba said, tapping some more buttons on her console. “Bridge to
away teams. Prepare for transport in five seconds.”

“Helm,” Kenta ordered. “As soon as the transport is complete, I want you to
execute evasive pattern Alpha-2 and get us out of weapons range of the
installation. See if you can get the attention of a few of those Dominion
ships to follow us as well.”

“Aye sir,” Tanith said, preparing to execute the orders.

Location: DOMINION ARRAY

Scene: Corridor

Time Index: Marathon +3.05

Daniel had taken command of A Squad for the duration of this assignment. A
squad was down to four members from its usual five, so the move had the
effect of bringing the marine squad up to its full capacity. The fact that
the position it was short was the medic made such a move ideal.

A Squad materialized inside one of the corridors and was almost immediately
subjected to fire. They all reacted with the quick skill and reflexes
common to Starfleet Marines and headed for cover behind the corner of the
corridor, while Daniel pulled out his tricorder and did a scan.

“There are no soldiers,” he said with a sigh of relief. “The defences in
our corridor appear to be automated. I’m reading multiple Jem’Hadar
signatures within the installation however, so there’s a chance we might run
into some along the way.”

“Is there any way to pinpoint their location?” Sergeant Jacob Crunk asked,
firing a few shots around the corridor before ducking back and barely
avoiding disruptor fire from the automated defensive installations that
currently had them pinned down.

Daniel shook his head. “The power grid on this station is enormous,” he
said, tapping a few buttons on his tricorder. “I can barely get anything
with all the countermeasures in place. If we can bring down the power
level, we might be able to make that determination.”

[[Maverick to Clarkson, what’s your status Major?]] came the voice of
Colonel Bret Maverick across the comm. system.

Daniel ducked his head down further behind the corner in response to an
explosion that occurred close to them, before tapping his comm. badge and
replying. “We’re pinned down by some automated cannons,” he stated. “We’re
in no position to move forward anytime soon.”

[[Well then find a better position,]] Maverick ordered. [[We need to
deactivate the communications system on this installation and we’ve got less
than eight minutes to get that done.]]

“Acknowledged sir,” Daniel answered, before closing the comm. link as
another round of fire struck close to their location. He frowned, thinking
for a moment, before making a decision.

“Private,” he said, directing his words towards B’R’Ik, the Caitian weapons
specialist accompanying the team. “I want you to find out exactly what
we’re dealing with in terms of those defensive weapons.”

“Aye sir,” the man replied.

“Sergeant,” Daniel said, turning around to look at Crunk. “Take Corporal
Jarvin down this corridor and see if there’s another way we can get at those
weapons without getting our heads blown off.”

“Yes sir,” Crunk answered, nodding his head in understanding.

“Private Parker and I will give the three of you cover fire,” Daniel said,
referring to the one member of the team he’d not yet given an assignment to.
“We go on my mark. Ready?”

He looked around at all the nods of affirmation, before nodding himself.
“Okay. Three…two…one…MARK!”

NRPG: Well, nobody else seemed to be going along with this part of the
storyline, so I figured I’d go ahead and send the marines down to the
installation. I’ll have more to write about them at a later date!
