========= “Firefight” Continued from Taylor’s “124” ========= Location: DOMINION ARRAY Stardate: 2428 [2.4] 0626.1039 Scene: Corridors Time Index: Marathon +3.20 “Okay. Three…two…one…MARK!” At the word mark, Clarkson and Parker turned, firing in the direction of the automated defence turrets they’d seen earlier. At the same time, Private B’R’Ik crawled across the corridor to a better vantage point while Sergeant Crunk and Corporal Jarvin made their way down the corridor, hoping to take advantage of the distraction to find another way to neutralize the weapons. Both Clarkson and Parker got off a few shots at the turrets, scoring one hit that was quickly absorbed by a personal shield generator that dispersed the energy across the face of the grid. As soon as B’R’Ik had made his way to a safe vantage point, both Clarkson and Parker ducked back behind cover, just avoiding a barrage of disruptor fire that blew a couple of chunks out of the wall just around the corner. Before Daniel could issue new orders, his comm. badge chirped. [[Maverick to Clarkson. Dominion sensor jammers in place, we’re going to have to pick our way through this maze to find the control room. I’m contacting the ship to send them on their way.]] Daniel tapped his comm. badge. “Acknowledged,” he replied, before looking across the corridor with the turrets to B’R’Ik who’d made it to the other side. “I need some good news Private,” Daniel called. “There aren’t any Jem’Hadar that I can see,” B’R’Ik. “And it looks like there are only two turrets. One fragmentation grenade should disable their shield grid, at which point we can neutralize them with our rifles.” “Sounds like a plan,” Daniel said, tapping his comm. badge. “Clarkson to Crunk. What’s your status Sergeant?” [[Dead end sir,]] came the reply. [[We’re on our way back to your position.]] “Acknowledged,” Daniel said before closing the link and retrieving a fragmentation grenade from one of the pockets in his vest. “We’ll go as soon as they’re back,” he said to Parker and B’R’Ik, seeing both of them nod their understanding. A few moments later, Crunk and Jarvin materialized out of the darkness a few metres away from the other three marines. “It’s almost pitch black over there,” Jarvin reported as they took up their positions. “I’d guess the Dominion hasn’t been using that particular part of the array for at least a week.” “We’ll worry about that later,” Daniel answered. “Right now, we need to move forward. Now, I’m going to toss this grenade down the corridor and I want you to be ready to attack the turrets as soon as it goes off.” “Yes sir,” Crunk and Jarvin replied in unison. Clarkson looked across the corridor to make sure he’d gotten the attention of B’R’Ik and then quickly rolled the grenade down the corridor towards the turrets. All five marines waited tensely for a few seconds and then pounced as soon as they heard the explosion. The sounds of energy weapon fire echoed through the corridor as the marines attacked the turrets, exploding them with well placed phaser hits. When the smoke cleared, there was nothing left of the automated defences in the corridor but some smoking debris. “Good work men,” Daniel said approvingly, turning around and frowning when he saw B’R’Ik on his knees, clutching his side with his rifle having been dropped on the ground. Leaning close to the Private, Daniel pulled out his medical tricorder and did a quick scan. “Scout up ahead,” he ordered the other three marines. “See what we’re up against.” As the other three walked down the corridor, Daniel put down the tricorder and reached for a hypospray. “Looks like these vests worked,” he said. “Most of the anti-coagulant agent was blocked from entering your system and I can clear what little concentration of it there is. If you’d been hit like that without the vest, you’d be dead right now.” The Private coughed and then chuckled as he felt the hypo inject. “Thank God for small favours,” he replied. ========= NRPG: Just moving things along… ========= Rahul Chandra <vrccan_at_gmail.com> Playing… Lieutenant Commander Jeffrey Gorman, MD Executive Officer USS PATRIOT & Major Daniel Clarkson, MD Marine Executive Officer USS PATRIOT No virus found in this outgoing message.
