Dominion Ground Array #5

Catherine checked her watch and glanced
over her shoulder as the ground installation.
On cue, she felt the ground rumble under her feet.
It began on a sub-audible level, but rose
rapidly and the high-yielding explosions tore the place apart.
The woman ducked low as weapons fire shot
over her head. Most of her team had
gotten out of the installation in one piece after they had seeded it
with
explosives. Problem was, so had the Jem’Hadar.
Sterling staggered under the weight of the marine over her
shoulder as she
resumed her escape.
“Sit rep!”
She hollered as she tried to pick the easiest way over the
ground strewn
with rocks and bolders. Trust the
Dominion to stick a base on one of the most barren places in the
universe. The
entire place was like the lunar surface – full of rocks and boulders,
some of
them the size of houses.
“Two down with broken ankles in last ten
minutes.” One of the marines yelled
back.
There was no way they were going to outrun
the Jem’Hadar. They had too many
injuries spread throughout the entire group.
Besides, they had nowhere to run to.
“Find
a defensible position and dig in!” She
answered and started heading towards the highest concentration of her
marines. With the extra weight she was
lagging behind, and if it wasn’t for their covering fire Catherine
suspected
she would have already been shot.
A rock rolled under her foot pitching her
onto a knee. Sterling gasped as she went down. Gritting her teeth she pushed off forcing
herself to move as quickly as she could with the dead weight on her
back.
One by one the marines all filtered towards
their defence. They settled in and
started to fire, forcing the Jem’Hadar back.
Catherine darted over their position and ducked down behind the
rocky
rim of a small gully. With a soft groan,
she rolled the unconscious marine from her back onto the ground.
“Now what?”
one of the lieutenants asked her as she took up a firing
position next
to him. She gestured to
one of the marines to check
on her patient.
“Keep them back until we get picked up.” Catherine turned and picked out three of the
other marines. “You, you, you head out to the flanks and rear. Make sure we don’t get pinned down.”
She had long ago forgotten everyone’s name,
but they didn’t seem to mind.
“What’s the sit?” Catherine
pulled her helmet off to cool her
body down. She drank half of the canteen
of water as she changed the charge on her rifle. There
was the occasional volley of fire
between the marines and the Jem’Hadar but it appeared that they were in
a
stalemate. At least for the moment.
“Lost five in the installation. Two
broken ankles, another three with twisted
ankles. Five shot, none seriously, those
vests did their job.” The lieutenant
replied with a scowl. “These rocks took
out most of them.”
“The Jem’Hadar will make a move sooner or
later. They still have their Vorta.” Catherine chewed on her lip thoughtfully.
“I thought you had him?”
The woman frowned. It was a
bit of bad luck really. She had a perfect
prisoner in her grasp when
one of her team had been felled. She had
to turn the Vorta loose to pull out the marine before the installation
and its
communications array were destroyed.
“Had to carry Gibbs out. Couldn’t
handle both of them.” She
pointed to the long powered scope on his rifle.
“Here, give me the scope.”
James gave her a very long look before
doing as instructed. “There is no way in
hell you can pull that shot off.” He
told her as she affixed it to the barrel of her weapon.
“Never say never.” She
smiled as she scrambled away to get a
better vantage point. “Keep them pinned down otherwise we’ll get
overrun.”
