“New Engineer”
(contd from Taylor’s ‘127’)

Location: USS COMMENDATION

Scene: Main Engineering

Ensign Meera Song had completed performing a level one diagnostic of the century class vessel’s propulsion systems, when a communiqué from Starfleet Command came for her. When Commander Daiuon, ship’s chief operations officer, had indicated it was urgent, Meera became concerned and quickly headed to one of the empty terminals and accessed the message. She began reading its contents and in the next few moments, surprise washed over her facial features.

“What’s going on, Meera?” Lieutenant Polairis Arisa, the Chief Engineer, inquired, noticing the shock on her deputy’s face. The slightly taller Bajoran woman stood behind Song’s chair and read the message, still occupying the screen. “Well, congratulations,” Arisa stated, beaming with pride.

Song smiled. “Thank you, ma’am.” Meera had been transferred to the USS PATRIOT to take over the position of Chief Engineering Officer. She had served on the COMMENDATION for nearly a year as assistant chief engineer and had learnt a lot from the experience. The Human/Betazoid hybrid considered Polairis her mentor and often went to the Bajoran for advice, which the latter gladly obliged.

“You deserve it, Ensign,” Arisa went on, feeling proud of her former assistant. “In fact I believe the PATRIOT is fortunate to have you run their Engineering department.”

“You’re too kind, chief,” the younger woman stated with modesty. Deep down, Meera was pleased with the promotion. She would miss her colleagues on the battle cruiser, but was excited to embark on a new journey at the PATRIOT.

The Bajoran CEO chuckled. “Since the transfer is effective immediately, you can head to your quarters and pack.”

“Yes ma’am.” Song nodded, getting up. “I have to report within a week.”

“Well the PATRIOT is docked at the station,” Polairis jested, running a hand through her short, black hair. “So your trip there should take no time.”

“That’s true.” Meera agreed.

“Well good luck on your assignment,” the Bajoran said warmly. “You will be missed.”

“Thanks.” Song then commented. “But you command an excellent team here and I am confident you will manage well. It was an honour serving here as I learnt a great deal from you, Lt. Polairis.”

Arisa nodded. “Thank you, Ensign.” For a moment, the two engineers were silent, each of them contemplating Song’s transfer to the PATRIOT. “Keep in touch and may the prophets be with you.”

“I will,” Meera stated. “And take care.” With that said the two women shook hands and parted with Song heading for the main entrance and Polairis to her office.

Location: GS-2
Scene: Promenade-> Illogical Eaterie
TI: Two days later

All packed and ready to go. Meera said her final goodbyes to her former crewmates on the COMMENDATION and left the ship. The Indian woman strode in the promenade, carrying a satchel containing some of her personal items. The rest of her belongings were arranged to be transported to the PATRIOT. Prior to coming on board the nova-class starship, Song would be meeting her cousin, Lt. Savitri Ganesh, the GATEWAY’s aOps at the Illogical Eaterie for lunch. It was her first visit to the Vulcan restaurant. Savitri wanted to treat her for a meal as a going away present, since neither were sure when the PATRIOT would take port at the station the next time.

Spotting Lt. Ganesh at the entrance to the eatery, Song waved at her elder cousin. After briefly exchanging their greetings, the two women entered the restaurant and took their seats at a corner table. A waiter arrived and took their drink orders. Both women chose green tea and were currently perusing the menu.

“So,” Meera began, glancing briefly away from the menu. “Have you been to this place before?”

Shaking her head, Ganesh answered as the waiter returned with their drinks. “Yes I was here twice with two Vulcan colleagues.”

The newly minted PATRIOT’s Chief Engineer took a sip of her hot, steaming tea. “I hear many give this restaurant a try at least once.” In the few months that the COMMENDATION was based at the GATEWAY, Meera hadn’t indulged herself too much in the pleasures of the station. She had sampled a few shops and restaurants but spent the majority of shoreleave in the holosuite or her quarters, working on little engineering projects. Occasionally Song enjoyed taking strolls in the arboretum.

“Yes,” Savitri nodded. “Vulcan cuisine is rare in these parts.” Changing topics, the Indian woman inquired. “So, how do you feel about this new assignment?”

“It’s a bit sudden,” Meera admitted. “I am still getting used to the change, despite having been two days since I received my transfer orders.” Taking another sip, the engineer added with a tiny smile. “But I am very excited about the new position and the challenges it entails.”

“Well I’m glad to hear,” her cousin stated happily. “And I am confident within no time you will immerse yourself in the PATRIOT’s engineering, enough you will end up becoming part of it.” She chuckled after the last phrase.

The part Betazoid smiled, fully aware that she was viewed as a workaholic who was very devoted to her field. “Well it’s nice I got to have this lunch with you before heading to my new ship.”

“Well, let’s hope we can get together again when you drop by the station the next time,” Savitri grinned, finishing off the last remnants of her tea. “I believe I’ll have another cup.”

Location: USS PATRIOT
Scene: Bridge
TI: One hour later

Meera had taken her first step into the bridge of the flagship. Following her lunch with Savitri, she headed directly to the PATRIOT. She was grateful for her cousin’s position as deputy chief of station operations, who directed her to the Nova class vessel’s docking area. GS-2 was a huge station and unless one had the correct directions in their hands, they would end up getting lost. Without any problems, Meera managed to reach her new ship.

Prior to departure from the COMMENDATION, Meera had already started reading up on the PATRIOT’s technical specs. She wanted to get familiarized with the ship’s systems as soon as possible and was already eager to get down to Main Engineering to start working.

The CEO felt a tiny knot in the pit of her stomach due to the nervousness of starting one’s new assignment. She observed the bridge, which was abuzz with activity. The other officers silently went about their daily tasks and hardly paid much attention to the newcomer.

NRPG: Hello Everyone! Meera Song is now onboard the PATRIOT. I look forward to writing with all of you and getting to know your characters :) My next post should hopefully have Meera explore her new surroundings and interacting with her fellow crewmates.
