“Arrival”
Continued from Erik’s “Peacekeeping”
=========
Location: USS PATRIOT
Stardate: 2424 [2.8] 0901.0014
Scene: Main Bridge
The PATRIOT had been on the road so to speak for hours. With their
transwarp drive out of operation, the journey had been extended by a
significant amount of time. The crew for the most part wasn’t complaining
however, since the extra time gave them the opportunity to familiarize
themselves with the IRATHI system and its inhabitants.
As Jeff read the material on the PADD in front of him, he noted in relative
dismay that there wasn’t that much information on it. The IRATHI were
holding their cards relatively close to their chest at the moment,
apparently preferring face-to-face contact for the initiation of a full
exchange of cultural information. All Jeff had access to for the moment was
a few pieces of governmental and basic visual information.
The Irathi were very similar to humans in their appearance, although their
skin appeared to be slightly jaundiced when compared with a human’s
side-by-side. In this respect, they looked more like Romulans than Humans,
although the lack of pointed ear tips was a dead giveaway to any biologist
that the Irathi were a wholly distinct species.
As for their government, Jeff noted that the main capitol building was
located on IRATHI III, one of the two inhabited worlds in the system. The
government itself functioned very much like a republic, with the head of the
government holding the rank of Prelate. At least, that was what the
PATRIOT’s Executive Officer thought he could tell from the little bit of
information he had on the PADD.
On the one hand he was a bit annoyed by the lack of information and on the
other hand he understood. After decades of Dominion rule, he could
understand why the Irathi were hesitant at embracing other cultures and
opening up to them. He gathered that part of his mission here was to try
and coax the people of this system into being more open with the Federation.
“We’re approaching the IRATHI system now sir,” Tanith announced from the
flight control console.
“Slow to impulse,” Jeff ordered. “And place us in a geosynchronous orbit
around the capital city.”
“Yes sir,” Lieutenant Corwin answered, before carrying out the man’s
instructions.
Jeff tapped his comm. badge. “Captain Kenta to the bridge,” he said. A few
moments later the doors to the ready room opened and the Captain emerged,
quickly getting a status report from his Executive Officer before sitting
down in the command chair.
“We’re in geosynchronous orbit now Captain,” Corwin reported.
“There’s an incoming message from the surface,” came the report from Ensign
Vasquez at tactical.
“On screen,” Kenta ordered, getting up and standing with his hands behind
his back as he regarded the viewscreen. Presently, the image flickered and
the face of an Irathi male appeared.
{{Greetings to you,}} the man said. {{To whom am I speaking?}}
“I am Captain Benjamin Kenta,” replied the PATRIOT’s Commanding Officer.
“Of the Federation Starship PATRIOT.”
{{I welcome you and your people to IRATHI,}} the man replied. {{My name is
Adjutant Gek. I am the Chief Communications Adjutant to the Prelate of
IRATHI. It is my job to act as a go between in many situations, this being
one of them. I am relaying transporter coordinates to you now.}}
“Very well,” Ben answered. “A team will be beaming down from the PATRIOT
soon.” As the screen flickered off, the Captain turned to his First Officer
and gave a nod. “Assemble your away team, Commander.”

Time Index: 10 minutes later
Location: IRATHI III
Scene: Transporter site
As the blue haze gave way to a materialized group of Starfleet personnel,
they noticed that there was a group of Irathi locals standing in front of
them. Gorman immediately recognized the one standing at the front as the
man they’d just spoken to on the ship and ventured forward, the rest of the
group coming behind him.
“Welcome to IRATHI III Federation soldiers,” Gek said with a slight
inclination of his head. He stopped when he noticed that Jeff was leading
the expedition. “You are not the same man I spoke to a few minutes ago.”
“That’s correct,” Jeff answered. “I’m Lieutenant Commander Jeffrey Gorman,
the First Officer of the USS PATRIOT. It’s customary for the First Officer
of a starship to lead the initial away teams on any expedition.”
“I see,” Gek said. Gorman was able to pick up the surprised expression on
his face, but was unable to tell if his reaction to Captain Kenta’s absence
was positive, negative or neutral.
“This is Colonel Bret Maverick,” Jeff said, indicating the well-built man
standing beside him. “He’s in charge of the PATRIOT’s marine detachment and
will be seeing to the initial safety and security of our forces when they
are helping reconstruct your infrastructure.”
“This is Lieutenant Kimmura Sanba,” Jeff continued down the line of senior
officers that had accompanied him to the surface. “She is head of
operations on the USS PATRIOT and will be assessing the extent of
infrastructure repair that needs to be completed.”
“And this is Dr. Tam Niala,” Jeff added, coming to a halt beside the
newly-minted medical professional. “She’ll be in charge of the medical
relief mission.”
“I am happy to meet all of you,” Gek said, bowing slightly in the direction
of the four officers. “May I present my associates? Gelak is the Chief
Medical Adjutant to the Prelate and Gesik is the Chief Interior Adjutant to
the Prelate. They will be working closely with your officers and providing
them with whatever information they need.”
“As for you Commander,” Gek continued. “The Prelate and his Chief Military
Adjutant would like to meet with you as soon as possible. We have much to
discuss.”
“I don’t see a problem with that,” Jeff answered. “Just give me a minute to
issue instructions to my officers.” As the Irathi communications adjutant
moved away, Jeff turned to the other three officers.
“Lieutenant Sanba and Dr. Tam,” he started. “I want you to work with the
Irathi officials and assess the situations in your respective fields as soon
as possible. We can bring down initial teams of operations and medical
personnel to help you with the assessments. Once you’ve made your
assessments, feel free to call upon whatever operations, medical,
engineering, science and security resources on the PATRIOT you feel are
necessary to commence relief operations.”
“Colonel Maverick,” Jeff said, turning to the Marine CO. “Please issue the
appropriate orders to your marines to ensure the safety of all Federation
personnel that beam down to the planet. You can place your ExO in charge of
coordinating that however, since I’d like you accompany me to the meeting
with the Prelate. If the head of the IRATHI military is going to be there,
it’s a good opportunity for the two of you to commiserate about the
situation planetside.”
Maverick nodded at the PATRIOT’s Executive Officer, before moving off a few
paces to contact the ship. A few moments later, a team of operations and
medical personnel had materialized in the planet to help with the assessment
and they were quickly followed by groups of marines for their protection.
As the Irathi officials met their respective PATRIOT counterparts and
started moving off into the city, Jeff and Maverick turned back to Gek.
“We’re ready,” Jeff announced.
“Then follow me,” Gek replied.

NRPG: So, just to revisit what happened in my post, the PATRIOT has arrived
in orbit of IRATHI III and the initial teams have beamed down to the planet.
There’s a team in charge of assessing the extent of infrastructure
reconstruction that needs to take place and a team in charge of assessing
the extent of medical relief the IRATHI system will require. Keep in mind
that we’re talking about the whole system rather than just the capital city,
so there’s a lot of room for you to toss in things should you wish to do so.
Also, don’t get discouraged if I didn’t mention your character in my post.
With all of the back and forth between the PATRIOT and the surface that is
likely to happen over the course of this mission, getting your character to
the place where you feel most comfortable writing for the mission shouldn’t
be difficult to do.
As always, any questions, concerns or comments can be shot the way of Erik
and I.
