“Repairs and Diagnostics”
(contd from Rahul’s ‘Arrival’)

Location: USS PATRIOT
SD: 2.80901.1352
Scene: Main Engineering
TI: Before Arrival at the IRATHI system

Her first day was hardly over and yet Ensign Meera Song was left with tons of work. She hadn’t read the reports on the damages sustained from the Marathon operation but expected the repairs to be fairly extensive. She figured something huge happened with the ship that resulted in shutting down transwarp. The young woman had not visited Main Engineering, which many referred to as the heart of the starship and something the newly minted CEO also believed. Repairing transwarp was critical as it would make a big difference in a combat situation.

Meera slowly entered the section of a starship where she was going to work for the majority of her time at the PATRIOT. She hadn’t gotten the chance to properly meet her fellow crewmates, since everything happened so fast. Song made a mental note to get to know the other senior staff members so that a good working relationship could be established.

Some of the other engineers peered behind their shoulders from their terminals a step down from the walkway, upon hearing the new chief’s footsteps. Meera nodded in acknowledgement at them but moved forward towards the warp core and noticed the massive terminals on either side of her path. Song figured them to be the Master Systems Display console, which was often manned by the Chief Engineer and an assistant. It was a suitable location to establish the terminals as they provided an excellent view of the core as well as the rest of Engineering.

Any initial nervousness held by the hybrid had immediately disappeared upon entering Engineering, a place she considered her comfort zone. Meera felt at ease, when gazing at the core and became eager to get down to work. But first she needed to find the CEO’s office. The woman of a mixed heritage spotted one of the engineers at MSD console glance up at her and made her way towards him.

The engineer, a young Trill man, inquired, peering quizzically at her. “May I help you, Ensign?” The officer himself was the same rank as that of the newly assigned chief engineer.

“I am Ensign Meera Song, the newly assigned chief engineer,” Meera introduced calmly.

The other officer stood up and greeted his chief with a tiny smile. “Yes, everyone here’s been expecting you.” He then offered. “Would you like a tour of the place?”

“Perhaps another time, but thank you,” Song stated, sounding appreciative of the other engineer’s gesture. “Right now, the Captain has ordered us to make completion of the repairs from the last mission a priority, particularly transwarp.”

“Yes, the transwarp drive lost power during the last mission,” the Trill nodded. “We’ve been having trouble fixing it though.”

Meera pondered for a moment before stating. “I will need to first play catch up and get myself up to speed with everything that’s going on here.”

“Ensign Suvak, the previous chief, have left some detailed reports in your office.”

“Well, looks like I will need to head there first and read them,” Song decided.

TI: One hour later

The Federation’s flagship was currently underway on its journey to the IRATHI system. Meera had managed to get up to speed with the repairs needed to be done and was aware of the time constrictions. With the PATRIOT on a relief mission that time around, Meera wasn’t expecting the ship to go into combat anytime soon. However, one should expect the unexpected, especially in a war. Song hoped they would be able to complete the repairs, get the transwarp drive online before the ship was forced to engage the enemy.

Meera and another engineer, a Benzite woman who was a specialist in warp drive systems were heading to the nacelle that housed the transwarp drive. According to Suvak’s report, the plasma regulator was taken out during the last mission, thereby resulting in making transwarp drive non-operational. Meera knew fixing the regulator was a simple matter and would only take a couple of minutes yet it was puzzling at first to her as to how a couple of days had passed and the drive was still off-line. She was aware there wasn’t much time when marathon was still taking place to make the necessary repairs.

A level one diagnostic had already been taken on the transwarp drive prior to the Vulcan’s reassignment. Song had spent a great deal of time studying the results of the investigation as well as her predecessor’s recommendations to avoid a similar problem in the future. It seemed the strain caused by the multiple jumps during Marathon was too much for the drive to handle.

**Well, ** she mused. **Better start working on a solution. ** Meera had hoped to get the transwarp drive functional as soon as possible. The CEO made a mental note that once the transwarp became operational, she was going to assign a team of engineers to monitor it closely, ensuring it would not go off-line in the middle of the PATRIOT’s next battle.

--------------------------
TI: After arrival at IRATHI III

The PATRIOT had arrived at their destination without incident and the away teams led by the ExO, Lt. Cmdr. Jeff Gorman had been dispatched down to the planet surface. The Chief of Operations, Lt. Sanba was assigned to assess the extent of infrastructure repairs. Having just been liberated from the Dominion, Meera wondered just how much reconstruction work were needed to be done for IRATHI III, IV and the colony on the moon orbiting the seventh planet. But there was lot of work to be done on the ship such as the repairs carrying over from the PATRIOT’s last mission.

Repairs were progressing smoothly. Meera was glad the flagship’s current mission involved mostly providing relief to embattled worlds as her department could complete their repair work in peace. The CEO took on the task of getting the transwarp drive back on-line with the assistance of three other engineers. Fixing the transwarp was close to completion. All that was left to do was conducting a few more tests on the drive as well as run a few simulations to try avoiding the wear and tear situation that damaged it in the first place.

[[Bridge to Engineering,]] came Captain Kenta’s voice through the comm. system.

“Song here,” the engineer acknowledged, knowing her CO wanted an update on the repairs.

Kenta inquired. [[How are the repairs coming along?]]

Meera reported, her tone calm and mildly confident. “They’re progressing well. We’ve managed to get majority of the repairs completed.”

[[That’s good to hear,]] the Captain stated. [[What about the transwarp drive?]]

“Finished repairing the regulator,” Song replied. “But we still need to run some tests before bringing the drive back online.”

[[Understood,]] Ben said, before questioning. [[How long will that take?]]

The Chief Engineer answered. “I estimate two hours, sir.”

[[Okay.]] The CO instructed, before terminating the channel. [[Keep me updated on your progress.]]

“Yes sir,” Meera complied and returned back to her work.
