"Come." Ben called out after the door chime.
Niala walked in. "You wanted to see me, Sir?" After the initial blast, she had been called back to the ship in order to treat the injured crew and would remain until Security and marine forces could locate and disarm the explosives based on Catherine’s information.
"Have a seat." he waited for her to comply, then continued. "I asked you here because I have a request, not an order. Confidentiality is important, and you may consider what I ask you to do to be unethical, so I'm giving you a chance to walk out now. If that's what you choose to do there will be no repercussions and I will never mention this conversation again."
She hadn't expected anything like when she was summoned. "Is it illegal?"
"No." Ben said without hesitation. That reassured her somewhat.
"I'll stay," she said after a short pause, considering what the possible ramifications of this could be.
Ben nodded. "I appreciate that." It was his turn to pause, as if steeling himself for what came next. "I've decided it's in the best interest of the ship if I begin having regular counselling sessions." She could tell it was a difficult thing for him to admit. "I'm still
having a difficult time getting past what happened at the battle of Gateway." They had discussed the topic before, and she knew what he was talking about.
"But, sir," Niala questioned, "I'm not the ship's counselor anymore."
"I could speak to one of your old assistants, but frankly you're still the most qualified person on the ship until Command sends us your replacement, but that's not why I asked you."
"Why, then? If my qualifications aren’t a factor…"
"It's important to me that the crew doesn't find out. We are at war, and people need to have confidence in their leadership." He explained. "It would be difficult to hide regular visits to the counselling department, but it won't be hard to explain visits to sickbay."
"There are any number of conditions that aren't serious, but still require regular treatments." Niala nodded in understanding, trying to come up with a list that wouldn’t reflect badly on the captain. "If need be, there are even a few that I wouldn’t have to officially enter onto your medical record, in case one of the nurses or Ensign Dugan reaches you before I do. I understand. My only concern is whether I determine you to be unfit for duty. I doubt it will come to that, but I’d like to be clear before we begin."
Ben's eyes narrowed. He knew it wasn't a threat, she too had an obligation to the crew, but no captain likes the suggestion they may not be able to do they're job. "It is your prerogative as CMO to relieve the CO of command if you feel they are unable to perform
they're duties. Should you feel the need to exercise that right, I won't protest your decision."
"Very well, Captain." She replied. "When would you like to start?"
