========= “Tangled Webs” Continued from Bethany’s “Can You Hear Me Now?” ========= Location: IRATHI III Stardate: 2424 [2.8] 1014.0030 Scene: Outside Caves Josh Morris was standing right outside the cave entrance that the other four members of the away team had just taken to get inside. After scanning the horizons and areas of the rock structure that were especially obvious ambush points, his mind wandered to wondering what the away team was doing at that very moment. He became so distracted from his scanning that at first he didn’t see it. Eventually however, the black splotches on the horizon caught his attention. Frowning in their direction, he noticed the splotches getting bigger. With no time to get out his tricorder and do a scan, Morris was left with a quick decision to make. Spotting an outcropping of rock nearby, Morris headed across to the outcropping, placing himself out of view of the oncoming figures. The figures stopped just in front of the cave entrance, allowing Morris to get a good look at them. They weren’t Starfleet and they weren’t wearing the uniforms of the Irathi Security Forces, which left Morris with one conclusion based on what he knew about the politics on this planet. His suspicion was confirmed when the group parted and what looked like their leader walked in front of them, pushing a bound and gagged person in front of him. Based on the man’s uniform, Morris guessed that he was an Irathi security officer. Shaking his head slightly as the group walked into the caves, Morris waited to make sure they were completely out of earshot before tapping his comm. badge. Much to his chagrin however, he found he was unable to raise the away team in the caves. After thinking for a moment, he opened a comm. line heading back to the Starfleet post at the capital city. “Morris to Gorman,” he said. “I think we’re going to need reinforcements. I’ve been cut off from the away team and a large group of what looks to be rebel soldiers have just entered the caves.” [[Acknowledged Morris,]] came the voice of the Executive Officer of the USS PATRIOT. [[I’ll dispatch reinforcements immediately. Just sit tight for now and keep me apprised of the situation.]] “Acknowledged,” Morris replied, before closing his comm. link and tightening his grip on the marine assault rifle he had in his hand. ============ Scene: Starfleet Post at Capital City Jeff immediately closed the line to Morris and then picked up a PADD. It contained a list of the personnel already on the planet and their current assignment as well as a list of personnel that were still available to be pulled off the PATRIOT. He looked at the list grimly, noting that with each passing moment the availability of combat forces was getting smaller and smaller. The marines were already completely committed and now the security forces of the Federation’s flagship were starting to be deployed in large numbers as well. In his short stint on the USS PATRIOT, Gorman had never seen anything come even close to stretching the considerable resources and personnel that the ship had at its disposal, but this mission was certainly going to stretch them to the limits. Just as he was considering that point, the blue haze of the transporter drew his attention. Seeing the PATRIOT’s Marine Commanding Officer materialize on the planet’s surface, Jeff let out a sigh of relief as he walked over to the marine. “Certified fit for duty,” Mav said before Jeff could even ask the question. “The docs in sickbay fixed me up just fine.” “Excellent Colonel,” Gorman replied. “Because I need you to lead an away team.” He related the events that had taken place in Maverick’s absence, pointing out the shortage of manpower they had at the moment. Mav was silent as he listed to the Executive Officer’s update, nodding once or twice as he took in the details. “We’ll beam down another team of security and I’ll lead them to the caves to rendezvous with Morris,” Maverick said. “We’ll assess the situation there and then decide on a course of action based on what we see.” “Very good Colonel,” Jeff said. “I’ll be here coordinating city patrols and relief efforts, so contact me when you learn something.” “Understood.” ============== NRPG: Just pushing the action a bit.
