"The IQ of an angry mob"

(Cont'd from "All the cards…")

Location: USS STONEHENGE

Scene: Sickbay

Stardate: 2.70107.1207

TI: following on from my last post, before we hit NOCTURINA

Izshlana, her mother and the newest addition to the Vort family shared a
bed, the younger woman sat up while her mum lay her eyes fixed on the baby
boy that had so recently come into the world.

"Where's dad?" Izzy suddenly asked the question that she'd been putting off.

The older Alterian blinked and swallowed a sudden lump in her throat. "they
wouldn't let him leave, I was only allowed because I was pregnant."

Izshlana stared unblinkingly at her mother waiting for the silvery skinned
woman to continue. "they evacuated women and children, he stayed behind."
She finished the explanation sadly her eyes drifted to the bed before she
looked up and attempted to explain to her daughter how everything would be
fine.

"The wormhole opened though?" Izshlana asked thoughtfully, she removed the
bottle from the baby's mouth and carefully moved him to her shoulder to burp
him.

Izla nodded her head and touched her daughters hand. "don't do anything
foolish."

Izzy stared at her mother then gave her a small sad smile, "what like
attempt a one man rescue mission to get my dad out of another war soon?" the
smile disappeared replaced with a simple look of despair. "I would if I
could." She said softly her eyes drifted around the room.

"your dad is a fighter he'll be fine." Her mother promised and then smiled
and changed the subject. "your young man seems nice."

"Landwyn." Izshlana provided Izla with a name and a wide smile, "he is
nice." She agreed.

"Are you…" she paused trying to decide how best to word the issue. "int…"

"Mother!" the older woman couldn't help but laugh at the outrage of her
daughter.

"You've been away from ALTHA for years and you still hold onto it more than
your father or I."

"I'm sure father wouldn't be impressed if I just willy nilly went around
sleeping with men." Izzy pointed out in a huff.

"What does willy nilly mean?" Izla asked

"Not a clue but it sounds good."

The door slid open and Landwyn cautiously put his head through the gap.
"Sorry to interrupt."

Izla nodded, "Come in Landwyn we were just talking about Izzy here willy
nillying and sleeping with men."

Landwyn raised an eyebrow and then looked at Izzy, "we're entering Nocturina
space, Mathew wants you to be on the Away team."

Izshlana sighed and stood up, she leaned down and carefully kissed her mum
as she handed over her little brother. At the door Landwyn followed her out
and waited for the doors to close his hand catching her shoulder so she
turned around.

"Be careful. These Nocturina's are a bit, well odd, and you're a bit…"

"Odd to?" Izzy asked with a cheeky smile. "you're not coming?"

"No Ardy and I are to stay here and do what we can, if you have to do an
emergency evac we'll need security here as well as the planet." He paused
for a moment. "be careful."

She smiled at that and stepped forwards, placing a hand on his chest she
looked up seriously into brown eyes. "I'll be careful if you do one thing
for me."

"Anything." He answered instantly.

"look after my mother and brother."

Landwyn smiled at that. "I'll do my best." He agreed.

Location: NOCTURIA

Scene: Alcedo Citadel

Izshlana Vort sat, her back to the wall her eyes on the Captain, she sipped
a cup of something hot and herby. Without Mathew she was now the security
for the Captain and the Executive Officer, so she had taken in everything,
from the Alcedo's in the room with them to where the entrances were to every
piece of furnishings scattered about what seemed to be a kind of dining
room.

It was a good job that the Nocturians were humanoid as no quarter was made
for the crew of the STONEHENGE, they were expected to deal and deal they
did.

"You're quiet." Phia finally interrupted the security officers thoughts.

Izzy glanced across and grinned and then turned back to the conversation, it
felt like small talk, polite conversation with no hidden meaning although
the tension in the air seemed to almost crackle.

"I'm watching and I'm not very good at doing two things at once." She
explained and saw the tug of a smile at her friends lips. "I still don't
think we did the right thing."

"Giving our captain her individuality." Phia stated and then shook her head.
"It was exactly the right thing to do. Everyone has to grow apart from their
family to grow as a person." Izshlana considered this as her friend added,
"you can't be daddies little girl forever."

"You can't?" Izzy asked sadly managing, impressively enough for her, to keep
the smile from her face. "Now shush, I'm trying to listen."

"They're not saying anything of use, it's all very…"

"Polite." Izshlana provided the word the bolian/Vulcan hybrid was searching
for.

"Right." Phia nodded, but then paused as an Aldeco loomed over them, the
Nocturina smiled and nodded to them.

"Is the drink to your liking?" s/he questioned.

"Yes thank you." Izzy smiled a little her skin flushed to a pale pink her
hair almost a baby blue to reflect the nocturina's own colouring.

Phia looked from the nocturina to the Alterian, "It's a sign of respect,"
she offered in explanation,

Izshlana flushed in concern at the thought of causing offence. "I can change
my colouring, on Altha it is disrespectful to be brighter than those of a
higher status, and it is respectful to mimic."

The Nocturina nodded at that then and smiled. "That is interesting." s/he
offered.

Izshlana's attention was dragged away as a door opened she watched as a
darker Alcedo stepped in and spoke to the humanoid who was currently the
most senior in the room. The way the Nocturina spoke made Izzy grit her
teeth as the high pitched noises just above her hearing range seemed to echo
through her bones.

Finally the conversation ceased and the Alcedo turned to the room speaking
in standard. "It is as I expected." s/he said sadly. "the other clans are
angry at having other worlders on Nocturina."

Rharn would have raised an eyebrow if she had one, instead Peter spoke up.
"What does that mean?" he asked slightly worried and trying to hide it.

"They're coming." The Nocturina answered, "and they are not happy."

Scene: Hatchery

Aerdan Jos glanced up as a noise seemed to echo around him, he winced as his
Andorian hearing picked up the combined shouts of a race of people who
communicated, moved and fought with sounds.

The doctors Antenna drooped into his white hair as he glanced to where Mya
Alcedo was sitting, the eldest one looked nonplussed heris features settled
into almost a contented smile.

"Could I ask what that is?" Aerdan asked respectfully his eyes torn between
a tricorder and the Nocturina.

"That would be an angry mob." The eldest one answered herim glanced upwards
at the Andorian.

He considered her words and her actions and decided he was safe for now.
"Could you ask them to keep the noise down?" Mya chuckled quietly at that
while the doctor went back to his work. After a few minutes he finally spoke
again, trying to drown out the growing noise outside with his own words.

"You didn't have their permission to bring us."

The Eldest one smiled although it looked pained. "they want help they're
just too proud to ask for it." Herim explained quietly. "The Alcedo clan
will have to face the others, and we will, hopefully with answers." She
finished pointedly.

"So you didn't ask." He repeated quietly watching scans intently aware just
how much was riding on him.

"A Nocturina does not ask." Mya reminded the Starfleet officer. "and
sometimes a leader has to do what's best for their people whether the people
want them to or not."

Aerdan considered this and then nodded, "maybe the leader should speak to
the people before they really do become an angry mob."

Mya looked at him intently then and Aerdan found himself forced to gaze into
eyes that seemed to burrow to his core. "Give me something to say to them."
Herim demanded a note of pleading in his tone.

Scene: Alcedo citadel

Izshlana Vort was stood in shadows behind a doorway, most of the away team
were here, but some weren't. Her concern wasn't for Aerdan being with the
eldest one the security officer considered him safe enough. Her thoughts
lingered on those who'd been left alone in a lab.

Peter appeared at her shoulder watching as the Alcedo spokesman addressed
the gathering throng outside their citadel.

"Do you know how you get the average IQ of a mob?" Izzy asked pleasantly
enough.

"No." the XO answered softly his eyes trying to take in everything they
could.

"You take the lowest IQ person there and then divide it by the amount of
people in the mob." She explained softly.

"Starfleet teach you that?" The brit asked after a moment to consider those
words.

"No, I read it somewhere; at least they don't have burning torches."

"It's not a witch hunt." Peter answered harshly.

"I disagree. A witch hunt is exactly what this is." She argued and then
shook her head. "actually burning torches would probably give us an
advantage."

Peter shook his head. "We're not here to fight." He cautioned.

Izshlana looked up at the Brit a small tight smile on her face. "Excuse me
commander, but I'm *always* here to fight." Her eyes drifted back to the
throng, "right now though I'd be content with retreating and getting the
captain to safety."

"S/he thinks s/he's safe here." Peter answered the security officer.

"Well with all due respect I think s/he's wrong."

"Me too." He agreed quietly his eyes glancing towards the labs and his
husband that they were effectively cut off from

NRPG: Hope I did OK, but what's an away mission without an angry mob?
Cookies for anyone who knows where the theory comes from.

I avoided using Thomas and Kiros as Aaron had set up a tag for Justin and I
didn't want to ruin anything he was working on

Oh and sorry for the silence, I was away and had to catch up, feel free to
yell if i've made a mistake or missed anything.
