“Survey Says?”
(Continued from “The IQ of an Angry Mob”)

  Location: NOCTURIA
Scene: Laboratory -> Outside Alcedo Home
  Stardate: [2.7]0107.2324

“Thomas, could you please hand me the hyerspanner,” Kiros asked the Science Officer as he knelt before the alien panel and unlatched it revealing it’s internal circuitry. He opened his case and pulled out a tricorder as he extended his hand taking the device from the other officer. “This is going to take me a couple hours to figure out Thomas, so if you need to I’d suggest reviewing the information they’ve given us on the meteor.”

“I agree,” Varn replied as he stood before another panel and pulled up the information on the lab’s screen. “Let me know if you need any help.”

The pair worked in silence for several minutes before Kiros broke the silence, “So Thomas, tell me a little about yourself.”

Keeping his focus on the panel and information that was streaming across the screen, Thomas didn’t answer right away, “Nothing interesting to tell really.”

Kiros continued to work before he posed more, “There has to be something.”

“Well, to be honest I was a cadet just like you once. I was assigned to the USS PROPHECY, with the crew that you are serving with on the STONEHENGE. Then I was kidnapped during an away mission, genetically altered and given wings by a race that happened to despise us before ending up falling for one of them and watching her die while Starfleet Admirals tried to experiment on me,” Thomas said bluntly before sniffing softly to himself and continuing on with his work.

There wasn’t much to reply to a response of that nature, but the cadet had asked the question. The next sound that happened to break the silence was the sound of a rather large mob entering the room that was given to assist Thomas in his search to destroy the meteor. It wasn’t long before those left in the room were removed and brought before the Alcedo spokesmen.

“Listen, the Eldest One has brought them here to assist in the problem that is facing our young. She/he believes these other worlders will be able to help and possibly solve the puzzle that perplexes us,” the Nocturian stated hoping to calm the mob.

“We do not need them, they are not welcomed here,” one voice shouted from the crowd.

Looking around at the mob and not seeing any other way out of this other than to try and ease the tension Thomas stepped forwards, “If I may be allowed to speak?”

The Alcedo spokesmen was hesitant but nodded allowing Thomas to move forward and making sure no one stopped his approach. Looking out over the Nocturian crowd, who Thomas could have sworn were almost ready to pounce on him and those with him he breathed deeply.

Thomas knew that his words had to be chosen very carefully and so he began, “Please, I speak to you not as an other worlder and not as someone that would pretend to understand the illustrious and dignified culture that stands before me. I do however speak to you as a scientist and a member of the Federation. The very nature of our government is set upon the beliefs that all life is valued, and that should be cherished. I don’t stand here promising that myself or the others will be able to find the cause of what is happening here and that we will be able to stop the meteor; however, I do promise that each of us will use all that is available to us from the knowledge we posses to the technology we wield to achieve that which has been asked of us. All I ask is that you let us try.”

Thomas didn’t know what else could be done, he had tried his best to do what he thought was right, but how the Nocturians would take it was unknown to him.
