“Services to what?!?” (contd-“A father's troubles and
the new squadron")

Location: USS STONEHENGE
Scene: Holodeck
Stardate: [2.8]0222.1252

Peter watched his husband as he moved.

At times Peter reflected on just how much of a
contradiction his husband was, and that’s why he loved
him so much.

A Security Chief with a minor in intercultural
studies, a fan of yoga and dancing, who was also an
expert in martial arts and boxing. Right now he was
exploring one of the more masculine of those persuits.

He moved lightly on his feet, confident, secure and
totally enjoying himself.

Castor likewise was dancing lightly on his feet
circling the ring opposite Matthew waiting for him to
make the first move.

The finer points of boxing were totally lost on Peter,
for that matter so were the not so fine points, but
then his attention wasn’t so much on the fight as the
fighters.

There was a marked contrast between the two despite
them both being well built Matthew’s build was
compact, muscular, and visibly powerful. Castor
however was leaner, taller, but equally as powerful.

Shaking his head Peter realised he was being
distracted, he should have known not to say yes when
Matthew asked if he wanted to come watch them spar.

Looking down once more at the PADD he held he smiled
and tapped in a few points and then turned to the
small console on the wall nearby. Generally the small
comm panels were used for instant communication, but
it wasn’t difficult for Peter to slice in his PADD and
send a text message to the personal systems of several
officers.

Location: E4
Scene: beach.

The beach was never busy, the entire population of E4
were the staff of the single Federation base, even
with the crew of the STONEHENGE the many miles of
beach were quite, it was easy to find a place to be
alone. None of the senior staff of the STONEHENGE
however were alone.

Groups of blankets were spread out across the sand
right up to the ledge of the beach, groups of people
sat and chatted, others strolled along by the surf, a
couple were throwing a ball around. As Peter stood
behind one of several barbeques they had set up he
watched the others. All the senior staff were here
along with several of the assistants and of course all
their families.

As he turned the food Peter chuckled at how clearly
some of them were enjoying the beach a lot more than
others, the kids of course generally enjoying it more
than the adults. The twins were not yet in the water
but were playing on a blanket nearby as Matthew was
also behind one the barbeques, Jackie however was
splashing around with Ishe.

Matthew and Peter kept chatting quietly to one another
and at one point Peter noticed Matthew pause, for a
fraction of a second, something other may not even
notice, but Peter did; which was why Peter didn’t jump
out of his skin when a pair of hands dropped down over
his eyes.

Considering the last time he had seen Castor he had
been on the STONEHENGE about to take a shower it
wasn’t a stretch to figure the only person he hadn’t
already seen at the party.

“Oh I don’t know, think it might be my sister?”
Laughed Peter as he turned around to envelop Maddie in
a hug.

Soon enough he was surround not only by Maddie but of
course the kids too.

It wasn’t long before the kids raced off to join their
friend but Maddie stood by Peter and matthew chatting.

“How are you find your new Captain?” She asked of
Peter.

“Quite intriguing, heris species for a start, we dealt
with them just recently, and yes we get along, it’s
still strange and awkward at times but then I was used
to your command style for some time.”

Maddie smiled at Peter’s attempt at diplomatically
saying he missed her and she patted him on the
shoulder.

“I think your crayfish are burning.”

Peter looked down at the barbeque and indeed one of
the crayfish was starting to blacken. For a good few
moments Maddie was ignored and left to chuckle to
herself.

Others on barbeque’s around the place began plating up
their food and Maddie suspected Peter had timed the
food to be done together.

As the large platters of barbequed food joined the
salads and bread on the trestle tables it was as
though someone had given an order as ever last person
on the beach descended on the plates.

When everyone was settled on the blankets Rharn, who
was wearing glasses to protect her eyes against the
sunlight, stood and Peter quickly followed, each still
with their plates in their hands.

There was no microphone, no stand, nothing to indicate
where they should stand so they just chose the most
convenient spot and waited while people turned to see
what they had to say.

Peter stepped forwards a little and began to talk.

“Please, keep eating, we wouldn’t want your food to
get cold. I know this is a little less formal than
you may have expected but still. First of all I want
to say a well done to everyone for how they dealt with
the last mission, even with the sad loss of one of our
own the Captain and I are proud of our crew. It is
with this in mind that we are pleased to have the
following.

Rharn turned and took a small pile of boxes from the
table nearby and, showing Peter the contents of the
first, stood ready.

“Lieutenant Xav'ion Vamad'ito Ard'n Anwyn
Budega-Jornam,” began Peter hoping he remembered the
full name. “I think this is long over due.” He carried
on as Ardy got to his feet and walked up to Peter and
the Captain.

“We are please to reward your excellent service with a
promotion to Lieutenant Commander; congratulations
Ardy.”

There was general applause as Rharn passed the box
with a hollow pip to Ardy, uniforms of course not
being worn to something like a barbeque on the beach.

After both Rharn and Peter had shaken his hand and
Ardy had started winding his way back to his place
Peter called out the next name.

“Lieutenant Makena Kagiso, for your dedicated service
we are happy to award you a promotion to Lieutenant
Commander, congratulations Makena.”

One more Peter paused while Rharn passed out the pip
and shook the doctors hand, Peter quickly too a bite
of a burger before it was his turn to congratulate
Makena .

“Right then, “ He continued once Makena was again
seated. “Ensign Iszhlana Vort.”

Izzy apparently hadn’t been paying proper attention
and it was only when Phia nudged her that she stood
and made her way to the front, a crayfish still in
her hand.

“For your service in keeping this crew safe I am happy
to award you with a promotion to Lieutenant Junior
grade, congratulations Izzy.”

Rharn had to wait while Izzy found a napkin to wipe
her hand before she could pass the box across, and
then again while she found somewhere to put the box
while she shook the Captain’s hand, she could hardly
do that with a crayfish in her hand after all.

When the young woman, who was rapidly changing colours
at the moment, had finally seated herself Peter
continued yet again.

“Lieutenant Aerdan Jos,” Yet another of the senior
staff now had to clamber up with the look on their
face that clearly said ‘what me?’

“For your services as a doctor to the grateful crew of
the STONEHENGE I am pleased to award you the rank of
Lieutenant Commander, and confirm you in to the
position of CMO after the Departure of Daisy. “

Peter took a last glance at the PADD on the table
behind him as Aerdan stepped back around the people
sat on the blankets.

“For services in counselling,” Peter glanced at Rharn
a wide eyed look on his face, “Lieutenant Phia, we are
happy to award you with a promotion to the rank of
Lieutenant Commander.”

It seemed that many of the others present shared
Peter’s wonder that Phia could be promoted for her
counselling services, but the promotion was there
never the less. Izzy though clearly didn’t find
anything strange with it and was clapping
enthusiastically.

Still Peter was genially pleased to promote a member
of their crew no matter how strange the reason seemed
so the handshake was entirely genuine when Phia came
to him, “Well done Commander.”

Phia’s “Thank you.” Was short, functional, and Peter
wasn’t entirely sure what she was thinking, but then
again he wasn’t the counsellor.

Rharn briefly addressed the crowd
“Thank you for your time, and congratulations to all
of you who received promotions, now please, enjoy the
rest of your day.”

It didn’t take long for Peter to get back to the
blanket his family were dominating; and it took even
less time before Boone was climbing in to his lap.

Peter ruffled his son’s hair and smiled at his
husband, he would enjoy this break while he could.

NRPG:

Congratulations Joy, Sarah and Jamie ! and yes I
promoted a couple of NPCs also, any NPCs that are
departmental assistants you can promote yourself, just
