"Beware Of The Dark"
(Continued from Joy's: "Homecoming")
#################

Location: USS STONEHENGE
Stardate: 2.80504:2305
Scene: Bridge

The Century Class ship span in the centre of the
holographic imaging area. All eyes on the Bridge were
turned towards the slowly spinning image of the
stricken ship. A few, however, were turned towards
the huge emptiness that hung behind the ship.

"How bad is the structural damage?" Rharn snapped as
she stalked out onto the Bridge.

"Not as bad as would be expected considering the
ship's current situation."

"Any definate ID on the vessel?" Rharn asked, "That
might give us some answers?"

"Not as yet. But we're working on it." Peter
immediately replied. He was peering over Cadet
Kiros's shoulder, "Can you pull those readings up
again?" The British man asked softly.

"Yes sir." Kiros immediately recalled the readings.

"It's D-jumped." Peter muttered, "And that could be
T-jump readings." He swore under his breath, "Rharn
we have a problem."

"Even more than the fact that that ship is spinning
before a black hole?" The Nocturian Captain asked
softly.

"Even so. We could be dealing with a virus or
bacterial agent that came from *anywhere* and
*anywhen*." He stressed the two words.

Rharn nodded, "We need more specifics." She pinched
the Bridge of her nose, "Are there any life-signs?"
She turned to Urika Shar, a recent addition to the
crew, at Sciences.

"There are, but they are sketchy and there are no
exact matches for races or species that we know of."
The Trill aCSO replied. "I'll try and clear up the
readings."

Izshlana Vort slid into the Security seat, and started
pulling up various readings, "There are no other
vessels in the vacinity." She offered. "And the
ship's, weapons and power systems are powered down."

Rharn looked across the Bridge at Peter, "Well that
helps so much."

"You knew that a team would have to go over there."
Peter offered gently.

"Yes I know." Rharn sighed, "Alright get your team
together Peter and send the secondary Bridge crew up
here."

"Yes Ma'am." Peter smiled, "Izzy, Urika, Kiros, you
are all with me."

"Oh and Peter take every precaution over there."
Rharn admonished her ExO.

"Yes Mother." Peter snapped off a jaunty salute and
joined the small team in the turbolift.

Within minutes the secondary Bridge Crew appeared.
Rharn glanced around and was pleased to notice that
most of them she was used to working with. Rose
Travis the pretty blonde Human slid into the Science
Seat, Commander T'ron the Vulcan Technical Officer
took Izzy's position and Kiros was replaced by B'rak.

"B'rak I want a constant lock on the Away Team, any
sign of trouble and they are back over here
immediately if not sooner."

"Yes Ma'am." The dark furred Alien nodded, his large
dark eyes hooded.

"Rose I want confirmations of the races of the crew of
that vessel as soon as possible."

"Of course."

Rharn slid into her seat, her red fingers clasped on
her knee, her black eyes fixed firmly on the rotating
vessel. "What secrets are you hiding?" She mummered
softly.

Scene: Shuttlebay.

Lt Ronnie Zanders walked into the shuttlebay. Her
body already encased in her evac suite. A large
rucksack was slung over one shoulder, the Vulcan
hybrid not even aware of the weight. "Dr Jos?" She
called across to the blue skinned medic.

"Yes?" Aerdan glanced up from were he was re-packing
his medical kit.

"I wondered if we could use these this mission?"
Ronnie was dangling a number of small hair bands from
one of her fingers, "I figured that when we board a
ship using transporters, well our bodies go through
buffers and filters to clean up any organism and
stuff...."

Aerdan nodded.

"Well I wondered if we could do something slightly
more portable, kind of like a surgical mask."

"And these are they?" Aerdan asked.

"Yep." Ronnie nodded, "I've programmed them with
bio-hazard filters, simple filters, a level two
force-field to protect the face."

Aerdan lifted took one of the bands and slipped it on
so that it rested just above his forehead.

"The on switch is just behind your left ear." Ronnie
offered.

Aerdan lifted a blue finger and pressed the on switch.
There was a soft tingle from were the force-field
just touched his chin, and a strange anti-septic
scent. "Why a head band?"

"Well I figured it might be somewhat restricting to
have to have a full chest, neck and head force-field.
This way it protects most humanoids respiratory
openings." Ronnie shrugged, "I thought that perhaps
we could wear them under our masks, and if it was
relatively safe, I'd risk taking my hat off and see if
they actually work."

"We would be better off trying them in a lab first."

"I've already done that with B'rak." Ronnie admitted,
"And it did do what we wanted, now we need some field
trials."

Aerdan nodded once, "Bring them with us but you only
use them with my direct consent and as long as I am
with you so that I can monitor your health."

"Ok Doc." Ronnie smiled.

"Can I keep this one?" Aerdan asked, "I would like to
run a few checks myself."

"Of course."

Peter clapped his hands, "Are we all ready?" He asked
as he glanced around his team. "We will dock as near
to the Bridge as possible. The Bridge is our first
priority, we can try and get a link between them and
the STONEHENGE and then we'll move through the ship.
Everyone will carry a phaser at all times." He
ordered, "This includes you Aerdan before you even
ask."

"I'll carry one, just do not expect me to use it."

Peter sighed, "Just make sure that you have one."
Turning he led the way into the shuttle.

Scene: Inside the Shuttle

Everyone not directly involved in flying the small
ship were running through last minute checks.
Ronnie's bag was unpacked around her feet and she was
busily double checking that every diagnostic tool she
had was fully charged.

Glancing up she saw that Kiros was watching her, and
she smiled grimly. "When we get over there Kiros you
will be taking charge of the Engineering Team. This
includes myself and Commander Aspinall."

"I'm not ready." The joined Trill argued.

"Yes you are." Ronnie grinned, and her one good eye
twinkled, "We have been watching you closely and
believe that you have an aptitude that needs to be
nutured not ignored. So you will be in charge and I
will float between Engineering and Sciences. If you
need me you only have to shout."

She tossed a number of things across to the Cadet,
"Here you will need these, add them to your pack. And
trust your instincts."

"We'll be docking in three minutes." Peter announced.
"Let's be ready ladies and gents."

Location: CENTURY CLASS VESSEL
Scene: Bridge

The Bridge was covered in dust. Izzy carefully picked
her way around the dis-used Bridge. "Urgh." She
turned a chair around and swallowed, "Commander, I
believe that some of the crew are still with us."

Peter glanced over and nodded, "Treat them with
respect but we need to get this Bridge working."

Like a well oiled machine the Away Team immediately
set about their jobs. Izzy was carefully examining
the body occupying what would be the Security
position. "Peter," She called softly.

The British ExO appeared at her elbow, "Yes?"

"They did not die of natural causes." The petite
Alterian Security Officer informed him. Her eyes
doing a detailed examination of the skeletal remains,
"This person was predated." She pointed with a
finger, "You can see the claw marks at the throat and
on the end of the chin, also there are gnaw marks on
some of the longer bones."

"Alright." Peter turned around, "We go around in
threes at the minimum. For now we presume that there
is a predator on this vessel." He turned to face the
small female, "Can you give me any more details?" He
asked.

"Not really." Izzy shrugged, "From the bone scars I'd
say whatever did it has large claws, and teeth."

"Thanks that was helpful and reassuring."

"I do my best." Izzy grinned.

Matthew Aspinall had taken a brief tour of the Bridge.
"All doors have been dead-locked Peter. Also there
appears to be a forcefield on the other side of the
doors."

"To keep someone out or someone in," Wondered Urika
Shar.

"Thanks, for that." Muttered Aerdan. He had moved to
Izzy's side and was also inspecting the wounds. As if
by magic a small medical tricorder appeared in his
hands. "This body has traces of Ferengi DNA, but it's
been fused with something else."

"I presume that something else is what Starfleet is
looking for Aerdan." Peter offered.

"I'd like to get this to a proper lab." Aerdan
sighed, "There is only so much I can do with a
tricorder."

"Do your best."

Kiros suddenly popped his head up from under the
Engineering console, "You should have some power now
Sir." He informed Peter, "I'll work on making it
completely stable."

"It will do for now, good work Cadet." Peter glanced
up, "Lights at 75%." He ordered and the lights on the
Bridge slowly brightened.

"Well that made the place look less gloomy." Izzy
muttered, "Not."

"There's a message on this console." Urika sounded
bemused.

"Can you access it?" Peter asked from the opposite
side of the Bridge.

"Oh yeah, it's here scratched into the surface of the
console, so no problem reading it there." Urika
swallowed, "It says *Beware the Shadows.*" She blew
on the dusty console top, "And whoever scratched it
has added another little note....."

"So?" Ronnie looked quizzical.

"Yeah just one word really." Urike looked up, "Well
three letters."

"Which would be..."

"H.E.L...." Urika offered.

"Very cheerful." Matthew muttered.

Suddenly the doors leading onto the Bridge made a
hollow booming noise. Followed by some scratching and
another few bangs.

"I think the welcoming committee has just found us."
