Irony Is Not Delicious

 Location: EARTH

Scene: Venice, Italy – Bonviva Villa

TI: About three weeks ago

"I still say she's still too young. There's no way she could handle this."

 "Have you told her that?"

 "Yes."

 "And..."

"And she's not talking to me."

 "Well what did you expect?"

"For her to prostrate herself down and say "Thank you, Horatio, you are a
wise and wonderful brother and I will do what you say". Then she should have
offered me her undying gratitude."

 "Uh...huh. Yeah...good luck with that."

Iphie Bonviva rolled her gray eyes at that as she listened to her siblings'
conversation from the library. Of course she wasn't talking to Horatio –
hypocritical idiot. Xana was only favoring slightly better because so far
her sister hadn't actually said one way or the other how she felt about
Iphie's announcement. But Iphie knew Xana well enough – that she hadn't
actually come right out and said something was more troubling than anything
else.

The whimperings of Dahlia, Xana's daughter, interrupted Horatio and Xana's
conversation. "I'll go get her," Xana announced.

"Nah, I'll do it. Soon you two will be gone, I need to get some time in
with her," Horatio announced. As he stood in the doorway between the
backyard that was on the water, and the library where Iphie hid he yelled,
"MAYBE IPHIE WILL TALK TO YOU SINCE SHE'S HIDING IN THE LIBRARY."

As he walked by Iphie kicked his shin – the idiot.

"Ow that hurt," Horatio muttered as he stopped to rub his shin.

 "Good," Iphie hissed.

Horatio grinned at that. "Knew I could get you to talk to me." As Iphie
growled Horatio went jogging through the house to where Dahlia was staying.

"Come on out, Iphie," she heard from the backyard.

Iphie briefly debated *not* going out but figured the consequences of that
would be too great. Walking out to the backyard, Iphie eyed Xana sitting
down at the wrought-iron table. "Join me," Xana said – probably thinking it
was an invitation but it sounded like a command.

Still Iphie sat down and looked at her older sister. "You're going to tell
me this is a mistake?"

Xana didn't look out at Iphie but instead looked out at the water. "I miss
this. When I'm away, this is what I miss. Holodecks don't do it quite
right," she murmured. Looking over at her sister Xana said softly, "No, I
won't say it's a mistake."

That shocked Iphie. "Horatio thinks it's a mistake," Iphie blurted out.

 "I know," Xana nodded.

"Even Mom and Dad weighed in and think its a mistake."

 "They would," Xana murmured.

"So what's wrong with you?" Iphie asked.

"Too much to say," Xana grinned cheekily. Shaking her head the elder
sister sipped her wine and stared off into space for a moment. After
gathering her thoughts, the officer-turned politician-turned restaurant
owner looked at her sister. "Do you love him?"

"Yeah..." Iphie replied with a confused look.

"No, I mean it. Do you really love him? Will you wake up everyday and want
to work at this? Will you still love him when he goes away for the next
mission? Will you love him when he's only there physically but mentally he's
million of miles away in another time, wondering what more he could have
done?" Xana looked at Iphie for a long moment. "Will you still love him when
he voluntarily goes into a suicide mission?"

Iphie's blue mouth opened up into an "O" but no sound came out. She should
have seen this coming and yet she didn't. Of course Xana would bring this
up. Belatedly Iphie realized that both of her siblings' reactions were in
line with who they were – Horatio had married two years ago and divorced ten
months after the wedding, when his wife gave birth to a baby that wasn't his
and she had know that all along. And Xana...well less than a year ago her
husband had died.

Xana leaned in and took Iphie's hands in her own. "Iphie, I love you. I've
had to be your mother when I would have preferred to have just stayed your
sister."

Iphie said nothing, swallowing back the tears.

"So...if you can tell me you'll love him through all that...well, you'll be
a better wife to Toshi than I was to Gene," Xana said softly. "And if that's
the case...then how could I say no?"

"That's not what I wanted you to say," Horatio growled from the doorway as
Dahlia clung to his leg.

Xana spared a glance for her brother as she sat back in her chair.
"Shockingly enough I don't answer to you," she said in her best
condescending voice.

"It's going to break her heart," Horatio yelled. Looking at Iphie he said,
"Call me a jerk if you want but really, Iphie, I don't want you to be hurt."

That line was the only thing that saved Horatio from a tongue lashing from
his younger sister. Slouching back into her chair she muttered, "That was
low, it took away my retort."

Limping into the backyard as Dahlia clung to his leg and giggled, the
Bolian/Italian doctor gave a look to his older sister. "They're too young,
they need to keep growing. And then they'll grow apart."

"We're not you and Eteni," Iphie pointed out referring to her former
sister-in-law. When Horatio gave her a look she straightened up. "Well I'm
sorry but we're not."

"And you're not Gene and I," Xana said softly. Leaning forward she said to
both of her siblings, "Every couple grows, and every couple has a chance to
grow together, grow apart forever, or grow apart and then find their way
back to each other."

Holding up a hand for peace Xana looked at her siblings and said, "However,
I would make a suggestion to see if this is the lifestyle you really want to
choose..."

TI: Now

Pushing the gravi-cart loaded up with her stuff, Iphie was cursing up
a...well...blue streak really. The Bolian/Italian woman was looking for a
ship that didn't exist.

Sadly it wasn't the first time in her life that she had to do this.

She hadn't ever wanted Starfleet but Starfleet kept finding her. First it
had been following Xana around from assignment to assignment. Then when she
decided she wanted to live on EARTH with her grandmothers (both long sadly
deceased) and closer to her brother, Horatio decided he wanted to be in
Starfleet too. So then Iphie wound up traveling around to visit him.

All the time moaning how she hated Starfleet.

So what happened? Well being the fool that she was she fell in love with
her friend who was...in SFA.

"I am an idiot," she muttered.

"Do all of your talk to yourselves?" came the bemused voice from behind
her. Iphie turned to see the elegant Maddie Zanders walking towards her.
After hugging her friend's sister and catching up on her kids' sitter,
Maddie looked at the young Bolian/Human and asked softly, "So...Iphie, I'm
surprised to hear you wanted to work in the Ten Forward of the STONEHENGE.
What brings you to civillian life in the fleet?"

Iphie Bonviva looked over at Maddie and without thinking said, "I fell in
love with a guy."

Maddie smiled at that as she guided the young woman towards where she
needed to go. **Now where have I heard that before?**
